The diversity of life
Including things
That are still living
And the things
That already went extinct –
Indicates one trend universal
That nature is busy with its rehearsal
In its trial
To shape and reshape
Life
With so many forms that it can take
And in so many different ways
That it can behave.
From amoeba to humans
And everything in between
That went
And that still remains
The possibilities are endless,
As the drive to try new things
Is relentless.
All kinds of plants and all kinds of trees
So many different ants and so many kinds of bees.
From the Mongolians to the Mohicans
And from the atheists to the Anglicans.
African Saharas and the Amazonian forests
Mojave Desert Death Valley and the deep see vents.
Some form of life is crawling walking or swimming
As nature for its rehearsal
Keeps on dreaming planning and weaving.
Such beautiful designs
With such melodious tunes and rhymes
To watching eyes and listening ears
There are plenty of clues in the chimes
And plenty of reasons for their cheers.
When facing failure
Nature knows how to tailor
Its tricks and its tools,
And using clever rules
Mastered in its own schools
It is able to solve –
The problems and obstacles
That are involved,
So that some new species
Can again evolve.
At the root of this success
And of the complexity and of the mixes
Is the structure of DNA and its functions
That gives rise to life and to all of its actions.
With four different letters
Arranged in a linear fashion,
With limitless combinations,
Life has been coded –
Which after studying
With trials and muddying
Humans have decoded.
Proteins are large molecules
Which are the most essential tools
That are needed to build any form of life.
Their structures and actions
Control all the reactions
Inside,
And thus dictate how we live
And how we survive.
Proteins are what DNA is designed to code
As apps for life in cells machinery it loads
Output are proteins of different kinds,
And when
With their functions and structures they align –
Life itself
Is the final product,
With all the diversity
In its shelf
With all its different constructs.
We humans like to think
That we may be the ultimate thing
That nature tried to create.
But do we really know
Where it may want to go
And what new things
It may want or try to initiate?
